The CereScan solution is based on the use of Brain SPECT imaging to diagnose brain abnormalities. Brain SPECT imaging is a nuclear medicine study. “SPECT” stands for single photon emission computed tomography process through which images are taken of function (or blood flow patterns) in the body. SPECT imaging  is approved by the FDA and has been widely used in hospitals and physician offices for imaging  many different parts of the body. The big difference now…and in fact, the CereScan Difference…is that CereScan’s SPECT cameras and proprietary processes are specifically configured to take images the brain.

CereScan couples the latest generation SPECT cameras, with two of the industry’s leading brain image reconstruction software packages that, working together, provide the highest resolution, most comprehensive brain images available. CereScan’s imaging process is opening new doors for specialists, doctors and other professionals who are involved with brain injuries and brain-based disorders.

More than ever before, CereScan is helping doctors diagnose mild and moderate traumatic brain injury, Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, ADD/ADHD, anxiety disorder, depression, obsessive compulsive disorder, autism, bipolar spectrum disorders…and other brain-based disorders.

In SPECT imaging, a radiopharmaceutical is administered to the patient. This reveals the blood flow patterns throughout the patient’s brain. Blood flow is indicative of  the level of activity in specific regions of the brain. And because brain experts know which parts of the brain control the many things we do everyday…they are able to get a better understanding of how blood flow or functional problems in the brain affect our daily lives.

As with all imaging procedures, a SPECT  brain scan is not a stand-alone diagnosis.  It is a valuable diagnostic tool that is used in conjunction with the patient’s clinical history and structured clinical interviews to provide a highly accurate report of findings and impressions specific to each patient. A CereScan report helps the patient’s doctor determine the best possible treatment protocol.  SPECT’s role in this process is paramount in that it can deliver objective, tangible evidence in assessing brain injuries and brain-based disorders, conditions that, without  a SPECT scan, are often open to subjective interpretation and missed diagnoses.
