Patients receive two brain scans, performed two days apart.  One scan assesses brain function during concentration, while the other gauges brain function at rest.  Each brain scan appointment will take about two-and-half hours.

Before each scan, an intravenous (IV) line is started.  During the concentration study, you perform a computer task.  A safe amount of a radiopharmaceutical will be injected through your IV about five minutes into the task.  This will create a “snapshot” of your brain activity during concentration.

After a 45-minute waiting period, you will be scanned. Our cameras offer an open, non-claustrophobic configuration for patient comfort. You’ll simply lie down on a padded table and be positioned between the two camera detectors, which will image your brain. The camera will rotate around your head and shoulders but will not touch you.

You will need to remain motionless (blinking and swallowing are O.K.) for approximately 30 minutes, while the camera is imaging your brain.

For the “resting” study, the process is almost the same as the concentration scan except, instead of doing a computer task during the injection period, you will sit quietly in a comfortable chair for about 25 minutes.

When your scans are completed, board-certified physicians will review the images.  A detailed report of your scans will be sent to your referring or treating doctors, Also, one of our clinicians may share those results with you in person at our office, via web conference or by conference call. The review session will last an hour.
